An Introduction

Jonathan & Judith have 3 daughters, 3 sons-in-law & currently 4 grandsons - all of whom live in Guernsey!

Dear Island Voter,

My name is Jonathan Le Tocq, and I have had the privilege of serving as a People’s Deputy in the States of Deliberation this term. I am 61 years old. Married to Judith with three grown up daughters, all married and together with their husbands living, working and serving in our island community. We also have the joy of four grandsons whom we adore. Fatherhood, parenthood, grandparenthood are very important to us and because we invest in these they are a large influence on our values and a major motivation for standing foe election.

This website seeks to outline the key principles which guide me as a People’s Deputy and explains the values, vision and policies I seek to pursue if elected.

In seeking re-election I respectfully therefore ask that you consider casting one of your votes for me.

Whilst I continue serving as Minister for External Affairs till the new term starts in July when the new Assembly is sworn in, I am planning to do my utmost to attend the various events which are being organised for voters to meet the candidates over the forthcoming weeks, to meet as many of you as possible, listen to your views and answer questions.

Please do not hesitate to contact me

Vision with Values

I have often stated and committed to stand for public service not self-service, and if elected I promise again to serve you in this way, through integrity, sincerity and hard work.

My vision is for an island community which carefully navigates the current global crisis, remains resilient in the face of future threats and can live peaceably with each other despite diverse views and backgrounds, appreciating all that is great about life in Guernsey. Most importantly my values, which can help us move forward to achieve this together, can be best expressed by stating that a vote for JLT is a vote for someone who is:

RESPONSIBLE – tried & tested, an experienced local statesman

RELIABLE – people trust me to engage with them & carry things through

RESILIENT – not afraid to persevere in tough situations

RESPECTED – by people from all walks of life locally & abroad

REAL – a genuine Guernseyman who tells it like he sees it but is not afraid to admit when he is wrong or to change his mind in the light of fresh evidence

About Me

At Castel School, aged 6... and yes I used to have lots of hair!

At Castel School, aged 6... and yes I used to have lots of hair!

Service - 5 terms in the States:  First elected in 2000 and initially served 2 terms; during this time I was on Education; President of Overseas Aid; Chair of the Public Sector Remuneration Committee; Deputy Minister of Treasury & Resources. I then took a break from politics during a time when my parents came to live with us and we cared for them, our children were also in their teens. It was good to be around more for our family during that time and I don’t regret it in any way. It also helped me reflect on whether I wanted to stand again and what I would seek to do if successful. Re-elected in 2012, I served initially as Minister for the Home Department and as Deputy Chief Minister, finishing the last two years of the term as Chief Minister after Peter Harwood resigned. During the 2016-20 term I served as as the first appointed Minster for External Relations and Constitutional Affairs. As a result I have served in once capacity or another on the senior committee of the States - either Policy Council or the Policy and Resources Committee.- for over 13 years.

I have also chaired and participated in numerous sub-committees including the Future Trade Relationship (Brexit), External Relations, Fiscal & Economic Policy, Social Policy, Population Policy, Third Sector, Financial Services Forum, etc.

I am a Castel boy, living in Cobo for most of my life, except for a few years studying in London and Paris and when first married. I have qualifications in French, music, theology and philosophy, trained in basic accountancy and worked in tax fraud investigation in London before returning to the island. I grew up speaking Guernsey Norman French as a first language and am proud to use it on official occasions to demonstrate our cultural identity. Additionally I have found being able to communicate in French very useful when representing the island internationally overseas whether in Brussels, Paris and other parts of the world where French is often the second language. It is often helpful to be able to distinguish ourselves and our interests from the UK by demonstrating that we are unique - “ni anglais, ni français” (neither English nor French) - our culture and constitution have a long, distinguished heritage of which I am proud.

Whilst I am still serving till the end of this term, I am planning to do my utmost to engage with you over the next few weeks, to explain more about my vision and values, to meet as many of you as possible, listen to your views and to answer questions.

Please give me one of your votes when we go to the poll on Wednesday 18 June 2025 (and the advanced polling days) or vote via your postal vote [all details here on the election2025.gg site)
